5⃣ Charged With Student's Suicide

  |   India News

On Monday, the police👮 charged Union minister Bandaru Dattatreya and 4⃣ others, including the vice-chancellor Appa Rao Podile,BJP🔸 legislator Ramachandra Rao and 2⃣ student leaders of Hyderabad University🏤 under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, with abetting the suicide of a Dalit research scholar, Rohith Vemula. A committee was sent by Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani to ascertain facts about Vemula's suicide. 200 Rapid Force Action personnel were sent to handle student groups protesting✊ the events that lead up to the suicide. In Dec 2015, the Ambedkar Students Assn.(ASA) were expelled over an alleged fight👊 with activists from a rival Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad(ABVP) group, over the Yakub Memon hanging. Although no evidence was found against Vemula who was part of the ASA, Dattareya wrote✍ a letter to Irani📄 calling the Uni as a den of "casteist, extremist and anti-national politics," & asked for action😡 against the ASA, which apparently led to Vemula's expulsion and eventual suicide.
