The Supreme Court (SC)🏤 has been hearing Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa’s👵🏻 wealth case who has been accused of having illegal assets💰. On Wednesday, the SC🏤 said that acquisition of assets isn’t a crime in itself unless it is proved that the funds to pay for them are illegal⚠. The SC said💬, “Disproportionate assets is not a crime. It is only a crime if it is proved that the source of the money is illegal. Otherwise, it [the illegality of disproportionate assets] is only an inference.” The SC🏤 asked how Karnataka could prove that the money “circulated” among the co-accused - N. Sasikala, J. Elavarasi, and V.N. Sudhakaran - was that of Jayalalithaa👵🏻. She argued that the accusations were baseless and completely presumptuous. The SC🏤 said that they could nothing except acquit the accused or confirm✅ the lower court’s judgement and convict them or refer the appeal back to the High court🏣.
