Historically, the Olympic Truce✌ was called to ensure the host city was not attacked💥 and athletes and spectators could travel safely to the Games and peacefully return to their respective countries👍. In the modern era, 7⃣ days before the start of Olympics, the United Nations (UN)🌐 launches an Olympic Truce worldwide aimed to use sport to reduce conflict and offer humanitarian support to countries at war👏 and create a window for dialogue and reconciliation😌. As the truce for the Rio Olympics kicks in, the UN, in partnership with the IOC has issued a series of stamps😯 depicting the Olympic rings and the slogan - Sport for peace - in three languages👌.
The issue took place a week before the start of the Olympic Truce, to highlight🔦 and promote sport’s contribution to peace around the world🌏. The truce ends a week after the Paralympic games, which takes place shortly after the main event😯.
