With Congress deadlocked, Clinton proposes new fund that could be used for Zika response

  |   World News

With Congress still deadlocked over an emergency spending bill to help combat the Zika virus, Hillary Clinton on Wednesday proposed creating a special fund that would enable health officials to respond more quickly to similar episodes in the future. “Doctors and public health experts have been warning for months that the Zika virus was likely to reach the continental United States, but Congress has failed to pass the president’s emergency funding request,” the Democratic presidential nominee said in a statement. “As a result, the Zika virus has gained a foothold in Miami, and 196 people have already been infected in the city — infections that may have been preventable.” Republicans have previously accused Clinton of trying to politicize a public health issue and accused her running mate, Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, of resisting Republican proposals to respond to the virus.
