Obama tried to stay upbeat about the elections. These pictures of grim White House aides tell another story.
As he has many times before, President Obama appeared before reporters in the Rose Garden on Wednesday, this time to offer his first public comments on Republican Donald Trump's upset victory in the presidential election. Before Obama showed up with Vice President Biden, scores of White House staffers, perhaps 200 in all, streamed into the Rose Garden, filling in the lawn behind a bank of television cameras. Rarely had reporters seen so many staffers at a Rose Garden event, and none of the reporters could recall seeing so many with such grim and somber expressions. Along the White House colonnade, the president's senior advisers also crowded together to watch.
