A woman and her shoes: It’s a consequential relationship one shouldn’t take lightly. Which is perhaps why Gray Matters founder and creative director Silvia Avanzi did her research before launching her line in 2016 of sculptural mid-heel glove shoes and ankle booties, which have become coveted pieces. Formerly in brand strategy for such brands as Stuart Weitzman, Donna Karan, and David Yurman, and the descendant of a line of Italian shoemakers, Avanzi dug into the psychology of women’s footwear when she created her first designs. Perennially chic and attention-getting, Gray Matters’s block-heeled pairs speak not only to modern-day efficacy but to Avanzi’s own polished Italian flair, too. The 42-year-old designer now calls New York home, but growing up in Verona, she was continually inspired by the sophisticated denizens of her hometown. She continues to embody a similar sensibility and commitment to all-day elegance in her own 9-to-5 dress code.
