Guardiola had sent Nasri to train away from the first team after he had reported for pre-season training overweight, and City later made the midfielder available for a transfer as they looked to move on several players who have no place in the Catalan's plans, such as Wilfried Bony, Joe Hart and Eliaquim Mangala.
But a loan move to Spain nearly broke down in late August when Guardiola made it known that he would like Nasri to stay, only for the former Arsenal man to force through the deal as he wanted first team football, rather than a squad role in Manchester.
