Shakib Al Hasan has emerged as the favourite among his contemporaries to become the next Twenty20 International captain of Bangladesh.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday (April 5), president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Nazmul Hasan, reasoned why the 30-year-old all-rounder makes for the strongest case. "As far as the next captain is concerned, there are four candidates - Tamim [Iqbal], Mushfiqur [Rahim], Mahmudullah and Shakib. Mahmudullah is yet to fully regain his rhythm, but among them Shakib is the player who is doing best and has also matured very much in recent times. Shakib is the likeliest candidate."
Shakib has played 58 T20I matches so far, scoring 1170 runs at a strike rate of 121 and picking 67 wickets at an economy of 6.81. He has led Bangladesh in four T20Is previously, the last of which came in 2010.
