A bombshell report in the New York Times is claiming that President Trump asked the FBI to shut down an investigation into one of his ex-cabinet members, Michael Flynn, who resigned from his post as National Security Advisor.
The report claims that ex-FBI Director Comey maintained memos of all calls and meetings with the President.
“I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go,” Mr. Trump told Mr. Comey, according to the memo. “He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.”
Trump fired Comey 2 weeks ago because he did not like the way Comey was running the "Russia investigation."
Why is this important? First of all, it is highly irregular for the President to try and influence an FBI investigation. Additionally, it is believed that Trump asked Comey for his loyalty at another dinner. It is also believed that Trump tried to influence the Russia investigation. If there are memos of these, they will be considered evidence of inappropriate behaviour by the President. Memos maintained by FBI personnel are considered credible evidence.
