Champions Trophy🏆 Flashbacks: Inaugural Edition - '98

The ICC Champions Trophy is all set to begin on June 1st in England. This would be the elite ODI competition's 8th edition. Let us take a look at how the how the tournament has played out in the past.

1998 ICC KnockOut Trophy:

The International Cricket Council decided to have more than one premier ODI tournament and came up with the concept of a tournament for the top Test playing teams.

Host: Bangladesh

🔰It featured 9 teams & a total of 8 games

1st Stage:
🔰South Africa Eliminated England

🔰Sri Lanka got the better of New Zealand

🔰98 was the year of Tendulkar vs Australia. He scored yet another century against them as India defeated the Aussies by 44 runs.

🔰West Indies eliminated Pakistan with a 30-run win.

Semi Finals:

🔰South Africa decimated Sri Lanka in a 39-over game. They posted a mammoth total of 240 (this was pre-T20 era, 6/over was still startling). Sri Lanka folded for 132.

🔰Windies knocked the wind out of the Indians with a clinical performance. India laboured to 242/6 and Caribbean team chased down the total with 3 overs to spare.

Finals:
South Africa in the final of an ICC tournament. Nope. That didn't happen this one time. They managed to choke the West Indies and became victors of an ICC even for the 1st and only time so far.
