With the Goods & Services Tax (GST) set to be rolled out at midnight, dignitaries including President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have arrived at the Central Hall of the Parliament for the launch of one of the fiscal reforms the country has ever seen. Vice President Hamid Ansari and the Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan have also arrived at the Parliament for the event which is conspicuous for the absence of Congress leaders who have boycotted it. Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Left are also staying away as the Parliament holds a midnight joint session to mark the historic move.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said that the GST rollout is a result of the combined efforts of all the political parties and termed the move an 'economic integration' of the nation.
