While people in India are worrying about how the GST rollout will affect their day-to-day activities, they now have something to rejoice about. Announcing buyer-friendly rules, the government has banned dual MRPs (Maximum Retail Prices) on packaged foods.
From 1 Jan'18, people need not pay higher prices for snacks, packaged water, soft drinks, etc at airports and even multiplexes. Labels with bigger font size for manufacturing date, use by/best before, producer's name, etc are mandatory to allow buyers to easily read them.
Declarations on food items have been made compatible with "labeling regulations" under the Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006.
