Congress boss Rahul Gandhi did not meet the Chinese ambassador to India amid a massive border standoff between the two countries, said sources in his party today, though they asked not to be named. What they are unable to explain is why, till around 8:30 am today, the Chinese embassy's website referred to Mr Gandhi conferring with the envoy on Saturday, July 8, while highlighting that they discussed "current Sino-India relations".
Reports of the meeting attracted strong criticism from BJP leaders. The BJP's Amit Malviya tweeted, "Congress must disclose why Rahul Gandhi felt the need to meet the Chinese envoy now and what was discussed?" He also tweeted, "Congress and Rahul Gandhi have a lot of explaining to do."
But Congress leaders say there was neither a formal nor informal session. The Chinese embassy has now deleted its post.
