Whales risk death to flee deafening sonar

  |   Tech News

Sonar from military ships and helicopters is forcing whales to dive for so long that they are at risk of a fatal condition similar to the bends, according to a study.

One beaked whale fleeing the sound waves slipped underwater for 163 minutes, almost half an hour more than the longest dive previously noted for any mammal.

Lone beached whales and even beached pods have become a familiar sight around the world. Three weeks ago a pilot whale was washed up at Kessock, near Inverness, while several fin whales have been found on coasts from Devon to Norfolk in the past year.
