Deputy Chief Philomena Mwilu Monday turned down an invitation to open the annual Law Society of Kenya legal week. The justice did not attend the function despite being invited. This would have been her first public appearance since the Supreme Court's full September 20 verdict on the presidential election petition.
The deputy CJ, Chief Justice David Maraga, judges Smokin Wanjala and Isaac Lenaola voted to nullify President Uhuru Kenyatta's victory in the August 8 vote. This would have also been Mwilu's first public show after a petition was lodged before the Judicial Service Commission seeking her removal from office over gross misconduct.
A petitioner moved to the commission seeking a probe on Mwilu and Lenaola's integrity on claims they worked with NASA lawyers to influence the verdict. Derrick Ngumu alleges judges and lawyers colluded in handling the presidential petition lodged by NASA leader Raila Odinga.
