Peng Shuai gets her first win over Petra Kvitova after eight meetings in dramatic fashion, winning two of three tie-break sets to knock out the defending Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open champion, 7-6(7), 6-7(5), 7-6(3), the longest tour-level match of the season at three hours and 34 minutes.
Making third appearance at Wuhan, Peng won her first match here having lost in the first round in 2014 to Barthel and last year to Zhang. This time last year she was ranked No.244, but since then has won 50 matches, one title and risen 220 ranking places.
Beating Kvitova for the first time after seven defeats in as many matches, Peng collected her fourth top 20 win of the season having defeated then‐No.20 Strycova at Dubai, No.6 A.Radwanska at Indian Wells and No.20 Bacsinszky at Eastbourne.
