A school in Elgeyo Marakwet was closed for a week after students went on a rampage on Wednesday night. Learners of St Peters Marakwet Boys' Secondary School were sent home after burning a dormitory and vandalising their classes, the staff room and a teacher's car.
They also broke into the head teacher and accounts' offices, where they destroyed items and stole Sh35,000, and took a teacher's laptop and phone. Students behind the unrest sneaked out that night to take alcohol, Marakwet West education director Evans Onyancha said, adding their mission upon returning was to cause chaos.
Onyancha said more than 1,200 students were sent home to ease tension in the school. "We decided to release the boys after consultations with the board of management and other stakeholders. They will be back next week to prepare for exams."
