The National Assembly has formed a select committee to spearhead the amendment of Kenya's election laws. The 15-member team will examine and undertake public participation on Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, (National Assembly Bill No.39 of 2017) and any other related Bills.
The decision was made on Thursday as the House waits for NASA's Minority side to appoint its six members. The MPs agreed the chairperson and four other members will make the quorum for the committee. The team will report back to the House on or before October 10.
Majority leader Aden Duale said the committee is necessary as the country is still in an election cycle, arising out of the requirement for a fresh presidential election. The Supreme Court declared on September 1 that President's Uhuru Kenyatta's victory was invalid so he will face NASA leader Raila Odinga again on October 26. He added there is urgent need to consider and conclude all matters relating to the poll to allow IEBC ample time to implement any changes related to the review of the election-related laws.
