Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo wants police to stop arresting and intimidating politicians fighting for the people's right to own land at the Coast. Madzayo said recent cases concerning Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and Mtepeni Ward MCA Victor Mwaganda were uncalled for.
Noting the two have a right to be in the forefront of championing residents' rights, he said a bad precedent has been set where land issues are concerned. "As leaders, when something is reported to them they have to act. If they go to the scenes, the most that is said about them is that they incited residents. This is very wrong on the part of police," he told The Star by phone on Thursday.
Madzayo asked the police to respect political leaders. "We saw what happened to Joho and the MCA, all because of shamba (land) issues, yet there are people who have to seek help from their leaders," he said. "They did not lead invasions on land." The Senator noted politicians intervene on land matters to ensure solutions are found before the cases escalate.
