Fifteen people were reported dead and several others were injured in a stampede that occurred at the Elphinstone Road railway station on Friday morning. Railway Police officials said that the incident occurred at around 10:50 a.m. on Friday.
“The rains in the morning had called a large number of people to gather on the footbridge at Elphinstone Road. At around 10:50 a.m., a part of the tin roof of the footbridge collapsed, causing panic among the people,” said an officer with the Railway Police.
The people, in their panic to escape what they thought was a major disaster, ended up creating a stampede on the footbridge, and around 30 commuters were injured and rushed to the KEM Hospital in Parel.
