Sri Lanka notched their first win of the tour in emphatic fashion as they whipped a Virat Kohli-less India team by 7 wickets in the first ODI at Dharamsala on Sunday.
After a 1-0 loss in the Test series, the visitors were written away well before the ODI series began but went on to rule the roost over an overconfident India with an incisive display of fast bowling from Suranga Lakmal, Angelo Mathews and Nuwan Pradeep.
Having chosen to bowl first, Mathews and Lakmal were almost unplayable with the new ball in a pitch that was helping them seam the ball a bit. Dhawan could not handle one that came in while stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma nicked a beautiful delivery from Lakmal. India did not recover from those early blows, with the middle order showing no patience to weather the storm out and build again.
Karthik departed after a painful 18-ball duck while Shreyas Iyer, unable to play his strokes, chopped on. Pandey, Pandya and Bhuvi all failed collectively. Only MS Dhoni stuck around, showing his famous tenaciousness to push a score which read 29/7 to 112 with a brave 65.
The chase, despite a few hiccups, was never in danger of derailing and the Lankans go into the second game with their tails up.
