U.S. Census Starts Counting Speakers of Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali.

The U.S. Census announced this week that it has started counting the number of people who speak Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, and Bengali.
According to the census,
- Punjabi speakers: 2,80,867 (48% live in California)
- Bengali: 2,59,204 (39% percent live in New York)
- Telugu: 3,21,695 (California, Texas, New Jersey)
- Tamil: 2,38,699 (California, Texas, New Jersey)
Hindi is the most popular south Asian language spoken in the US: 7,40,000 people speak it.
