Sri Lanka's captain Angelo Mathews has said that his team's over rate during their opening fixture of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 in London on Saturday (June 3) was "pathetic". Sri Lanka took four hours and seven minutes to complete the 50 overs during the South African innings whereas the time allowed to complete an innings is three and half hours.
Mathews didn't play the game due to a calf strain and Upul Tharanga stepped in. Tharanga was suspended for two games and was heavily fined along with the rest of the team. "That was pathetic. No excuse at all," Mathews said. "The whole team is responsible. Whoever the captain is, we have to back him and try and support him. The captain has to do so many other stuff. All the 11 guys must back him and support him," Mathews added.
