🔰 Australia 277/9 (50) (Head 71, Finch 68, Wood 4/33) lost to England 240/4 (40.2 ov) (Stokes 102, Morgan 87, Hazlewood 2/50) by 40 runs (D/L method)
A sensational ton by Ben Stokes (102*) saw England cruise past Australia by 40 runs in a Group A Champions Trophy encounter and qualify for the semifinals. More importantly, Australia have been eliminated and Bangladesh will join the hosts in the last four.
England won the toss and elected to put Australia in to bat at Edgbaston. Warner and Finch stitched together a solid 40 run partnership until the former fell. Finch and Smith then joined hands to accelerate the scoring in a partnership worth 90. After the two fell, Head played a masterful innings of 71* with the tail with wickets falling around him, to take Australia to a defendable 277-9. The wreckers in chief for England were fast bowlers Wood and Rashid who shared 8 wickets between them.
England got off to a disastrous start, losing both openers by the second over and Root soon after, leaving the tottering at a precarious 35-3. Skipper Morgan and star all-rounder Stokes then came together to tear apart the Aussie bowling with an authoritarian batting display where the former got 87 before getting run out and the later managed to end unbeaten on his century. When England were 38 runs shy of their target, the heavens opened up and the match was called off due to rain, with England winning by 40 runs according to the D/L method.
