The Handmaid’s Tale Has Its Very Own Runway Show Now

How do you dress for a looming dystopia? The buzzy young label Vaquera, a design collective comprised of Patric DiCaprio, David Moses, Bryn Taubensee, and Claire Sully, had some ideas of what the warped reality would look like at their Handmaid’s Tale–themed runway show at the Angel Orensanz Foundation.

If society mirrored the collection, there would be an actual handmaiden and her signature large white hat. There would be a blouse with a knee-touching bra with cups that could spin like a windmill. Making a spooky comeback, a reproduction of an actual suffragette’s look from 1909 would stride past your line of sight.

And looking like it was plucked out of a ’90s teen movie, so would a simple velvet slip dress. For footwear: medieval-looking leather poulaines with soft soles—hardly made for the angry stomping that occurred onstage.
