Tennis legend John McEnroe fears that Australia's Nick Kyrgios will 'run himself out' of the sport if he doesn't change his attitude.
It was only last year that the 23-year-old copped scathing criticism from McEnroe who dubbed his attitude as a “black eye for the sport” and that his career would be over within five years if he kept wasting his talent.
But McEnroe went on to handpick Nick Kyrgios as his first selection for the Laver Cup earlier this year, and then labelled him the most talented player since Federer after an incredible Wimbledon performance.
In an exclusive interview with the Nine Network's 60 Minutes on Sunday night, McEnroe warned that the Australian is on a path to tennis ruin if he doesn't receive the support he needs to change his ways.
“He’s the most talented tennis player that I’ve seen in ten years," McEnroe told the program.
“The difference between Nick and I at the moment is that I tried all of the time.
"He doesn't for whatever reason. I'm not Sigmund Freud. I wish I was 'cause I like Nick.
“I think that Nick is a real nice kid but he's going to run himself out of the game at this point, which I don't want to see."
