Sarah Beth Grey & Olivia Nicholls were unseeded going into Obidos. Playing on outdoor carpet didn’t cause any problems surface wise, however, the weather and the scheduling left the players having to wait a day to get the win.
In the first round the Brits were drawn against Pemra Özgen & Ana Vrljić. The Turkish/Croatian pairing started well in the first set, staying with the Brits, it wasn’t long before Grey & Nicholls established a break and kept their nose in front. The second set was much more of a stroll for the Brits as Özgen & Vrlji couldn’t get anything on the game of Grey & Nicholls, and the Brits marched onto the quarter-final 6-3, 6-2.
The quarter-final saw the Brits against the fourth seeds Romy Koelzer & Jessy Rompies. The German/Indonesian pairing tried to take the game to Grey & Nicholls, but the Brits were proving too strong. A single break of serve in the first set proved pivotal as the Brits held on to lead. The seeds fought back in the second set and it looked to be heading to a tiebreak. Grey & Nicholls however, managed to get the break right at the end of the set to book their spot in the semi-final 6-4, 7-5.
In the semi-final Grey & Nicholls were against another non seeded pairing. Andrea Ka & Inês Murta did well to stay with the Brits during the first set, before eventually Grey & Nicholls pulled away. The Cambodian/Portuguese pair did not fare any better in the second set. The Brits secured their spot in the final defeating Ka & Murta in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
