No.1 seed Garbiñe Muguruza continued her dominant run at Abierto GNP Seguros. The Spaniard lost ten games to reach the semifinals in her second appearance in Monterrey. In the quarter-finals, she dismissed No.8 seed Ajla Tomljanovic 6-3 6-0 in less than an hour.
The Croat-born Australian tried to counter the hard-hitting Spaniard who won most of the rallies, and hit 18 winners to 4 while Tomljanovic committed 10 errors to 8. Muguruza will meet Ana Bogdan who reached the third semifinal in three years after Florianopolis 2016 and Bucharest 2017.
The world No.90 defeated Miami standout Danielle Collins 6-2, 6-4. The American, inconsistent on return, suffered when Bogdan insisted to serve out wide from the deuce side.
