Army rower Sukhmeet Singh has the rare achievement of winning an Asian Games gold in his very first international assignment. But the 24-year-old from the Punjab village of Mansa almost never took up the sport in the first place.
"I had not played any sport professionally before joining the army, and didn't know anything about rowing. When they conducted the inter-battalion competition, it was my friend (Nirmal Singh) who entered my name. I told him it was a mistake because I had no interest in rowing," Sukhmeet, the youngest member of the quadruple squad that won gold, recalled the 2014 incident with a smile.
But once he got selected, the special attention given to the athletes at the Army Rowing Node in Pune became a life-changing experience. Being the newest member of the team, Sukhmeet occupied the fourth position in the line-up.
