As Neeraj Chopra threw the javelin to a distance of 88.06 metres, some 7,500 kilometres away from Jakarta, down a dusty lane in Panipat's Khandra village there were scenes of celebrations with people distributing sweets. "After the third round itself, we were confident that Neeraj will win gold for the country," Neeraj's uncle Bhim Singh told.
With the Asiad gold, the 20-year-old emulated the iconic Milkha Singh to become just the second athlete in the history of Indian sports to win gold in the same year at the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. Alarmed by this, his uncle Surender took him to the Panipat Sports Stadium gymnasium in 2011 and instructed the trainers there to get Neeraj back into shape. But he excelled so much in javelin that later I told him to take it up seriously," stressed Neeraj's father.
