Franco Marais is now free to join up with Gloucester after the Sharks were knocked out of the Super Rugby play-offs.
The South African hooker has been signed by the Cherry and Whites for the 2018-19 season but his arrival has been delayed by his current side’s involvement in the Super Rugby season, which ended at the weekend as they were beaten 40-10 by the Crusaders in the quarter-finals in Christchurch.
Gloucester will have to continue to wait though for prop Ruan Dreyer and lock Franco Mostert, who were both prominent figures as the Lions ran out 40-23 winners over Jaguares in Johannesburg.
The Lions will now face the Waratahs at Ellis Park on Saturday as they bid to reach a third successive final, which will take place on Saturday, August 4.
Marais has not featured for the Sharks in recent weeks but is expected to have a break before he joins up with his new Gloucester team-mates for pre-season.
With six weeks to go until the start of the new Gallagher Premiership season though he should arrive in plenty of time ahead of the opening game against Northampton on Saturday, September 1 and could join in time for the pre-season games away to Ulster (August 18) and at home to Dragons (August 23).
