WBO super bantamweight/junior featherweight champion Isaac Dogboe was named Sports Personality of the Year by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana at their 43rd Awards Night. Despite Dogboe’s capture of the world title happening in 2018, 2017 was when he became the number one contender to face Jesse Magdaleno for the title. He defeated Cesar Juarez in Accra to put him on the path to bantamweight glory.
He was also named Professional boxer of the year. In other awards, Midfielder Thomas Partey was adjudged the best foreign-based player for his exploits in 2017. Partey was rewarded for his outstanding performance for the Black Stars which saw him score 5 goals last year as well as his excellent display for Atletico Madrid.
Thomas Abbey saw off competition from Berekum Chelsea Striker Stephen Sarfo and Kotoko’s Amos Frimpong to win the best locally-based player award.
