'Et tu, Karnataka' Omar Abdullah quotes Shakespeare to describe Karnataka election result

  |   India News

Former Jammu & Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday invoked Shakespeare to describe BJP's success and Congress's poor show in Karnataka. Trends showed the BJP emerging as the single-largest party, although it was still a few seats short of the halfway mark.

The National Conference leader, who is widely followed on Twitter, tweeted three words, "Et tu Karnataka". Abdullah was quoting from Shakespeare's sublime tragedy Julius Caesar. The words "Et tu, Brute", a Latin phrase translated as "Even you, Brutus" that signify betrayal, were uttered by Caesar during the play when he was stabbed by his best friend Brutus.

Since 2014, when the BJP government helmed by Narendra Modi came to power at the Centre, the Congress party has witnessed one defeat after another in assembly elections and is currently reduced to having a government in just Punjab, Mizoram and Puducherry. The party was hopeful of bucking anti-incumbency and returning to power, but the state decided otherwise.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday congratulated the BJP for its “stellar performance” in Karnataka elections.
