Japan's Naomi Osaka powered her way past former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 6-0, 6-3 in the opening round of the Italian Open on Monday.

Shortly after Kei Nishikori reached the second round in the men's event, the 21st-ranked Osaka got off to a comfortable start in her bid for a second WTA singles title, setting up a second-round clash with top seed, world No. 1 and last year's runner-up Simona Halep of Romania.

The only other time Osaka and Azarenka met previously was in 2016, when Osaka suffered a 6-1, 6-1 defeat to the two-time Grand Slam champion in the third round of the Australian Open.

"Two years ago she made me run around the court so I wanted to make her run this time," said the 20-year-old Haitian-Japanese, who recorded her third victory of the season on clay.
