Mumbai Indians kept their hopes of qualification alive after a 3-run win over Kings XI Punjab on Wednesday. Mumbai put up 186 on board and managed to restrict Kings XI Punjab despite KL Rahul's heroic innings (94, 60 balls).
MI, asked to bat first, did not get off to the best starts and slumped to 71/4 at one point. But Kieron Pollard, making his comeback to the team, stepped his game up with a 23-ball 50. He muscled Mumbai's score to a healthy point along with Krunal Pandya (32). Andrew Tye was the best bowler for Kings XI, with his knuckle balls producing telling wickets for the Kings.
In reply, Kings XI started very well with Gayle and Rahul looking strong. Though Gayle fell to a short ball from McClenaghan, Aaron Finch and Rahul put together a scintillating partnership. The excellently-paced stand looked set to power Kings XI through comfortably but a sensational spell of bowling from Jasprit Bumrah swung the game in MI's favour. He got rid of Finch and Stoinis before sending back Rahul in the penultimate over in which he conceded just six runs.
That ultimately proved to be the difference as MI got out of jail in a crucial game.
